[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 안병용 의정부시장은 지난 7일, 천주교 의정부교구로부터 관내 천주교에 큰 도움을 준 것에 감사의 뜻을 담은 감사패를 받았다고 밝혔다.

이날 베드로 주교는 안병용 의정부시장에게 의정부 관내 천주교 및 문화재 의정부2동 성당의 보수 등에 기여한 공로에 대한 감사의 마음을 담아 감사패를 전달했다.

의정부2동성당은 지난 1945년 12월 설립됐으며, 한옥을 사들여 임시 성당으로 사용했으나 6·25전쟁 때 불에 타버렸고, 휴전 이후 1953년에 신부 이계광(요한)이 의정부에 주둔하고 있던 주한 미1군단의 군종신부 로제스키의 협조로 미군1군단 카톨릭 신자들의 헌금을 지원받아 건립했다.

천주교 의정부교구 의정부2동성당은 경기도 문화재자료 제99호로 지정돼 있으며, 수려한 외관을 가지고 있어 2019년 JTBC 드라마 ‘초콜릿(윤계상·하지원 등)’, 2020년 TVN ‘스타트업(배수지·남주혁 등)’이 촬영됐다. 

현재는 상시 개방하고 있으며, 매년 종교적 방문을 하는 카톨릭 신자 및 일반 관광객들의 발길이 이어지고 있다고 했다. 

의정부시는 의정부2동성당에 지난 2020년 외벽 줄눈 보수 및 내부 방염 도장, 올해 내부 바닥 보수공사 등을 진행하는 등 적극적인 문화유산 관리를 하고 있다.

안병용 의정부시장은 “의정부 관내 천주교 문화 및 경기도지정 문화재인 의정부2동성당의 적극적인 관리를 통해 시민이 행복한 문화도시 의정부시를 만들기 위해 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
