[남상훈 기자 = 원주시] 원주지방환경청이 관내 학생들의 환경에 대한 관심을 높이기 위해 원주시·횡성군·충주시·제천시 소재 9개 초·중학교를 대상으로 '2023년 청소년 환경과학교실'을 추진한다고 밝혔다.

‘청소년 환경과학교실’ 교육은 원주지방환경청에서 근무하는 측정·분석 전문가들이 초등학교·중학교에 직접 찾아가는 방문형 교육으로 실습형·강의형 교육으로 진행된다.

실습형 교육은 -물속 흐림정도를 측정하는 탁도 실험, -물벼룩을 이용한 물의 독성 실험, -현미경을 이용한 물속 식물플랑크톤 관찰, -음료수의 산도(수소이온농도) 측정을 직접 체험한다. 강의형 교육은 기후변화, 탄소중립, 생태계 등 환경과 관련된 다양한 주제에 대하여 학생들의 눈높이를 맞춰 진행된다.

지난해 운영 결과, 참여학교 7개에서 모두 ‘매우 만족’으로 응답하는 등 높은 만족도를 보이고 있다. 이에 올해는 그간 원주시에 한정되었던 지역범위를 횡성군, 충주시, 제천시까지 확대, 보다 많은 학생에게 체험학습의 기회를 제공할 예정이다. 해당 교육은 오는 4월까지 시·군 교육지원청을 통해 수요조사를 실시해 대상학교를 선정하고, 2～4분기에 대상학교와 일정을 협의해 추진할 계획이다.

한편, 지난 2020년부터 4년째 운영 중인 본 교육은 그간 총 15개 학교 377명의 학생들에게 제공됐으며 매년 규모를 확대하고 있다. 

김정환 원주지방환경청장은 “학생들에게 양질의 교육을 제공하여, 환경에 대한 관심과 올바른 이해를 도울 수 있도록 최선을 다할 계획이며, 올해 추진될 청소년 환경과학교실 운영에 관내 초등학교, 중학교의 많은 관심과 참여를 바란다”고 전했다.
