경찰은 그간 스쿨존 안전시설을 대폭 보강하고, 법규위반 단속과 안전 홍보에 주력한 결과 지난해 도내 스쿨존에서 발생한 어린이 교통사고는 ’20년 대비 90.9%(11→1건) 크게 감소하는 성과를 거두었다.

다만, 올해 도내에서 차량이 스쿨존에서 횡단보도를 건너는 어린이를 충격해 다치게 한 사고가 2건 발생한 바 있어 더욱 긴장감을 가지고 이번 스쿨존 안전활동을 펼치기로 했다.

이에 경찰은 먼저, 스쿨존 일제점검을 통해 여름철 노후·파손 시설에 대해 신속히 보수하는 한편, 녹색어머니·모범운전자와 협력하여 등하교시간대 학교 앞 어린이 보행 안전지도를 강화할 방침이며, 어린이사고와 직결되는 보행자보호의무·신호 위반에 대해 중점 단속하고 운전자와 어린이의 시야를 가려 사고위험을 높이는 고질적인 불법 주정차에 대해서는 지자체와 합동단속을 펼칠 예정이다. 

강원경찰청 관계자는 "‘어린이의 안전이 최우선’인 스쿨존을 만들기 위해 반드시 제한속도를 지키고,‘움직이는 빨간 신호등’인 어린이의 안전을 살피는 등 시민들의 관심과 자발적 동참을 당부"했다.
