이번 현장 점검은 최근 파주지역에서 3건의 공장 화재가 연이어 발생했던 것과 관련, 공장시설의 화재 예방 안전관리를 강화해 유사 사고의 재발을 방지하고자 추진하게 됐으며 실제로 대형공장의 경우 다량의 생산품을 적재하고 있고, 위험물과 유해화학물질을 사용·보관하는 경우가 많다는 점에서 화재 발생 시 대형 피해로 번질 우려가 있기 때문이다. 

특히 전기초자코리아는 연면적 11만6,091㎡, 19개 동 규모의 대형공장으로 천연가스와 전기 가열을 통해 원자재를 용해·성형 가공하는 시설인 만큼, 더욱 철저한 화재 예방 안전대책이 필요하며 이에 고덕근 북부소방재난본부장과 정찬영 파주소방서장 등 10여 명은 이날 현장 관계자들과 함께 공장 주요시설을 둘러보며 화재 취약 요인을 점검하고 보완사항에 대해 조언하는 시간을 가졌다.

고덕근 본부장은 현장 점검을 마치고 “위험물이나 유해화학물질을 취급하는 공장시설의 경우 화재발생 시 급격한 연소 확대로 다수 인명피해와 재산피해가 우려된다”라며 “사전에 철저한 안전관리 및 점검을 통한 화재 예방에 최선을 다해달라”고 말했다.
