[김준호 기자=동해시] 동해시는 지난 2021년 3월 첫 취항한 한․러․일 주요 거점 항만을 운항하는 카페리 이스턴드림호가 지난해 동해항과 지역 경제 활성화 측면에서 크게 기여한 것으로 나타났다고 밝혔다.

이스턴드림호는, 2022년 한해 총 57항차를 운항하면서 컨테이너560TEU, 중고차량 5,467대, 중장비 1,314대, 벌크화물 997T 등을 운송해 왔다.

이는 총 화물량 3,386TEU로 2021년 총 운송 화물량인 1,806TEU에  2배 가량 증가한 수치로 확인됐다.

두원상선과 거래하는 화주, 물류주선업자 업체 수가 크게 늘어났으며, 지난해 상반기에만 117개 업체가 이스턴드림호를 통해 자동차, 중장비, 컨테이너 등 수출입을 통해 벌크 뿐 아니라, 복합 물류를 취급하는 항만 조성에도 큰 기여를 한 것으로 나타났다.

또한, 2022년 7월에는 코로나19로 잠정 중단되었던 한-러간 여객운송이 재개되어 한해동안 12,597명이 이스턴드림호를 통해 동해와 러시아를 오가며 지역경제를 견인하였다.

한편, 우크라이나 전쟁 등에도 불구하고 동해항 카페리가 제한적이나마 상호 여객운송을 재개하여 한-러 간 인적교류 활성화 등 동해항의 인지도 상승이 높아졌다.

두원상선은 이스턴드림호를 통한 지역민 일자리창출, 여객을 통한 국제교류 활성화 등 다방면에서 지역과 상생하기 위한 노력을 하고 있다. 

최용봉 산업정책과장은 “선사와 지속적인 협의를 통해 관내 업체와의 상생협력을 더 도모하고, 카페리와 연계할 수 있는 관광상품 활성화를 위한 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.
