주민감시요원은 ‘폐기물처리시설 설치촉진 및 주변지역지원 등에 관한법률’에 따라 주변 영향 지역 11개 아파트 단지 및 관련 부락에 거주하는 주민을 대상으로 주민지원협의체의 추천에 따라 위촉될 예정이라고 했다.

이번에 위촉되는 주민감시요원은 총 12명으로 분기별 3명씩 활동하게 되며, 새벽 5시부터 소각시설 내에 반입되는 생활 폐기물의 적정 처리 및 오염방지 시설의 정상적 작동 여부와 환경오염 실태 조사과정, 더불어 기타 주민지원협의체가 협의한 사항에 대한 업무를 수행하게 된다고 전했다.

소각장 반입폐기물의 경우 소각이 가능한 가연성 폐기물만 허용되나 불연성 폐기물과 음식물 폐기물 등이 반입되면 소각장의 정상적 가동에 지장을 초래하므로 생활 폐기물 배출 시에는 가연성 폐기물, 재활용 가능 폐기물, 불연성 폐기물 등을 분리배출 하는 등의 시민들의 적극적인 참여와 협조가 필요할 것이라고 했다.
