[남상훈 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 강릉시는 옥천오거리 도심지의 원활한 교통흐름과 전통시장 방문객 주차공간 확보를 위하여 옥천동 고수부지에 주차장 설치공사를 추진한다고 밝혔다.

옥천동 기존 체육시설부지에 350면의 주차장을 추가 조성하여 운영할 계획으로, 주민들의 의견 수렴 후 체육시설 설치공사를 상반기에 완료할 예정이고, 이전되는 체육시설에는 풋살장, 농구장, 배드민턴장, 족구장 등 주민생활과 친근한 체육시설을 설치할 예정이며, 주민통행 편의를 위하여 제방로 하부로 추가 보행 통로박스를 설치하여 옥천동 도시재생사업과 연계한 발전 방안도 함께 진행하고 있다고 했다.

옥천오거리 회전교차로 기능개선과 여름철 성수기 등 극심한 교통량이 발생하였을 경우를 대비해 전문가와 교수의 현장 확인 후 의견 수렴 결과를 반영하여 추진했고, 지난 3월 말 교통섬 개선, 과속방지턱 개선, 커브 완화 등 기반시설공사를 완료하였으며, 4월 중에는 미끄럼 방지 포장까지 완료할 계획이라고 했다.

주말, 연휴 등 특정 시간대에 강릉 중앙·성남시장 방문차량이 모두 중앙시장이 위치한 금성로 방향으로 진입하여 발생되는 도심 교통정체 해소를 위해 중앙시장 방문객은 남대천 공영주차장으로 안내하도록 표지판, 내비게이션 등으로 보강하였고, 중앙시장 상인회에서도 주차장 대기차량의 꼬리물기를 차단하는 등 중앙시장의 교통정체 해소를 위해 함께 노력했다고 했다.
