지난 1월 19일 강원도의회 의원총회 개최 시, 김진태 도지사는“7월 1일, 강릉 제2청사 개청”을 발표하면서 향후 100년 강원도 발전의 새로운 시작을 대외적으로 공식 천명했다.

현재 강원도는 강원특별자치도 출범을 앞두고 영동지역과 영서지역의 균형발전에 대한 도민의 목소리가 한층 더 높아지고 있으며, 영동지역에 대한 관심과 새로운 성장 동력이 절실히 요구되고 있는 실정이다.

이에 강원도청 제2청사 시대는 지역사회의 열망대로 강원도 균형발전의 첫걸음이 될 것이며, 강원특별자치도 출범의 성공 열쇠는 바로 환동해본부의 제2청사 승격과 직결될 것이다.
