[장선희 기자 = 경기북부] 6월 4일 동두천시는 2021년 환경의 날을 맞아, 수원컨벤션센터에서 열린 ‘제26회 환경의 날 기념행사’ 시상식에서 환경보전과 지속가능 발전에 기여한 개인 및 단체에 수여하는 ‘제5회 경기도 환경대상’ 시·군 기관평가 우수기관으로 선정되는 영예를 안았다고 밝혔다. 

경기도 환경대상은 경기도 환경정책위원회에서 환경보전에 공로가 큰 지자체, 공공기관, 기업체, 개인 등을 발굴해 격려하고, 환경의 가치를 일깨우며, 지속가능한 환경사회로 발전시키기 위해 시행하는 경기도 환경분야 최고 권위의 상이라고 했다. 

동두천시는 지역 특성 및 규모에 따른 그룹별 평가로 진행된 1차 정량평가에서 자원순환, 자연생태 등 7개 부문 전반에 걸쳐 좋은 평가를 받았으며, 시·군 자체 특화사업을 평가하는 2차 정량평가 항목에서도 쾌적한 정주여건 조성을 위한 산업단지내 백연저감사업이 우수한 평가를 받았다고 말했다. 

시 관계자에 따르면, 동두천시는 산업단지 내 섬유염색업체의 텐터시설 운영에 따른 백연으로 인해 인근 주거지역에서 지속적으로 악취 민원이 발생함에 따라, 2016년부터 백연저감사업을 지속 추진해오고 있으며, 특히 2019년부터는 소규모 사업장 방지시설 설치 지원사업으로 연계하여 적극 추진한 결과, 2016년 30건이던 악취민원이 2020년에는 19건으로 감소한 것으로 나타났다고 했다. 

최용덕 시장은 쾌적하고 깨끗한 도시환경 조성을 위해 노력해온 관계 공무원들의 노고를 치하하며, “앞으로도 즐거운 변화, 더 좋은 동두천시를 건설하고, 지속가능한 청정 환경도시 동두천시를 조성하기 위한 환경행정을 펼치는데 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.
