[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 2월 18일, 국민권익위원회는 양양군청에서 군 경계 철책 철거 사업과 관련하여 강원도지사를 포함한 동해안 6개 시장·군수가 참석한 가운데 간담회를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

이날 간담회에서는 유휴 국방·군사시설 정리·개선 개요 및 성과 발표와 더불어 고성군 군 경계철책 철거 우수사례 발표를 진행한다고 했다. 

고성군은 지난 2015년~2021년 7년간 3단계 사업에 거쳐 총사업비 79억6백만원을 들여 총 32개 구간 32.8km의 철책을 철거하였으며, 이를 통해 관광객들에게 고성의 아름다운 해변 볼거리를 제공하고 지역경제 활성화 및 관광산업 발전에 기여하였으며, 실제로 군 경계철책 이후 고성군을 방문하는 관광객이 급증하였고, 경관개선에 따른 카페거리 형성 등 지역경제를 활성화를 비롯한 다양한 긍정적 효과들이 나타나고 있다고 전했다.

군 관계자는 “향후 철책을 활용한 기념품 제작, 관광객 유치시설 도입, 관광객 유치 이벤트 등 고성의 숨겨진 매력을 고성의 가치로 만들고 모두가 즐겨찾는 명품 고성 실현에 앞장서겠다“고 밝혔다.
