하지만 코로나 19 확산으로 인하여 2021년 동계 전지훈련 인원은 연평균 인원의 30% 수준인 482명에 머물며 침체기를 겪었으나 단계적 일상 회복을 위한 생활 속 거리두기 준수와 PCR 검사, 예방접종 완료 등으로 동계 전지훈련이 다시 활기를 띠고 있다고 했다. 

2022년 동계 전지훈련에는 축구 16개 팀, 야구 17개 팀, 태권도 2개 팀 등 총 6 종목, 50개 팀, 1,500여 명이 전지훈련을 실시 및 예정이며 평균 15일 이상 체류하면서 훈련에 임하고 있으며, 그 규모는 향후 더욱 늘어날 전망이라고 했다.

특히 축구 전지훈련팀 16개 팀 523명은 설악동 숙박업소에 장기 체류함으로써 설악동 숙박단지 활성화가 기대되며 종목별 전지훈련팀의 예약이 잇따르고 있어 속초시가 최적의 동계 전지훈련지로서 인기를 얻고 있다고 전했다.
