[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 원주시는 최근 관내 주요 도로에 첨단 교통기반시설을 설치하는 2021년 지능형교통체계(ITS) 구축사업을 완료하고 새해 1월부터 정상 운영에 들어간다고 밝혔다.

ITS 구축은 교차로 혼잡도를 분석해 최적 신호주기를 도출하고, 수집된 교통정보를 운전자들에게 제공함으로써 안전하고 편리하게 도로를 이용할 수 있도록 하는 사업이라고 했다.

앞서 원주시는 국토교통부 공모사업에 선정돼 총사업비 40억 원 중 국비 24억 원, 도비 1.6억 원을 지원받아 무실~만종 서부순환도로와 혁신도시 등 교통량이 많은 도로에 교통관제 CCTV 13개소, 영상검지기 6개소, 스마트교차로 15개소, 좌회전 감응신호 15개소, 교통정보제공시스템 3개소를 설치하고 2010 표준 신호제어기 60개를 교체하는 한편, 교통정보센터 소프트웨어와 하드웨어를 구축했다고 했다. 

원주시는 국토교통부 공모사업을 통해 내년도 사업비 20억 원 가운데 국비 12억 원과 도비 0.8억 원을 이미 확보했다고 전했다. 

이길복 교통행정과장은 “원주시 자율주행 시범운행지구 지정 계획과 연계한 첨단교통인프라 구축을 지속적으로 추진해 중부권 최고의 스마트도시를 만들도록 노력하겠다.”라고 말했다.
