이날 행사에는 원주지방환경청, 강원도, 양구군, 민북지역국유림관리소, 국립DMZ자생식물원, 양구군산림조합, 양구군의용소방대, 여성단체협의회 등 민·관 합동으로 100여 명이 참여한다고 했다.

양구지역에 많이 분포한 단풍잎돼지풀은 번식력이 뛰어나 다른 식물의 성장을 방해하며, 꽃가루로 인한 피부병과 호흡기 질환을 유발하는 대표적인 생태계교란 식물이라고 했다.

환경부는 생태계의 균형을 교란시키는 생물 34종을 생태계교란 생물로 지정·관리하고 있으며, 그 중 식물은 단풍잎돼지풀, 가시박 등 16종이라고 전했다.

원주지방환경청은 이번 제거행사 외에도 생태계교란 식물 결실기(7월∼9월)까지 관내 습지보호지역 등에서도 지속적인 제거 작업을 진행할 예정이라고 전했다.

원주지방환경청 이창흠 청장은 “앞으로도 민간단체, 지자체 등과 생태계교란 생물을 제거하여, 생태계의 건강성 확보에 최선을 다할 계획이다” 라고 말했다.
