[남상훈 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 야구 불모지 강원도가 야구 인프라 구축에 나설 전망이다. 강원도 횡성군에 위치한 베이스볼 테마파크에 대한 활성화 방안이 진행되고 있다. 강원도민들은 이 같은 분위기가 야구 붐 조성으로 이어지길 바라고 있다. 

1982년 프로야구 출범 이후 40여 년 동안 야구 불모지로 남아 있던 강원도가 새롭게 야구 메카로 거듭날지 기대감이 나오고 있다. 

지난 9일 허구연 KBO 총재가 김명기 횡성군수 당선인과 유상범 국회의원, 권순근 군의장과 만나 횡성 베이스볼 테마파크를 횡성의 랜드마크로 육성해 지역경제를 활성화 할 수 있는 방안에 대해 공유하고 다양한 협력 방향을 논의했다.

이후 KBO 허구연 총재와는 강원일보와 인터뷰를 통해 “인프라 구축을 통해 강원에서 야구 붐을 일으키는 것이 중요하다.”며 “KBO 차원에서 야구센터 조성을 위한 공모 절차에 들어가 예정이고 강원도 횡성이 그 바운더리 안에 있다. 조금만 시설을 보완할 경우 최적이라는 판단이다.”라고 말했다. 이는 강원도 횡성에 야구센터건립 계획과 관련된 내용이다.
