[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] '책 읽는 도시 의정부'를 역점과제로 지속 추진해 온 의정부시는 미술과 책이 융합된 새로운 패러다임의 미술특화 공공도서관을 지난 2019년 11월 29일 개관했고, 개관 이후 전국적인 관심을 한 몸에 받고 있는 의정부미술도서관의 기획 의도와 특색, 앞으로의 운영 방향을 다음과 같이 밝혔다.

 

'도서관, 미술관을 품다' 2014년 도서관 건립을 위한 타당성용역에서 지역적 여건 분석과 시민 설문조사 결과에 따라 미술 분야를 특성화하는 것으로 건립 방향을 도출하였고, 의정부시는 천상병예술제, 회룡문화제, 의정부음악극축제 등 문화예술에 대한 시민의 관심도가 높으며 신사실파 6인 '이중섭, 김환기, 유영국, 장욱진, 이규상, 백영수' 중 백영수 화백이 96세까지 의정부시 호원동에 거주하며 왕성한 창작활동을 하기도 한 예술친화적인 도시이며, 하지만 공립미술관의 부재 등 지역주민들의 문화욕구 충족 및 문화향유를 위한 시설은 매우 열악한 실정이었다. 이에 도서관의 정체성을 미술분야에 공공성을 강화한 미술특성화도서관으로 결정하였다고 했다.

의정부미술도서관은 오픈공간의 장점을 극대화할 수 있도록 모든 공간이 유기적으로 연결되어 있으며, 1층은 아트그라운드로 전시관과 미술자료를 열람할 수 있도록 구성하였고, 2층은 제너럴 그라운드로 일반 공공도서관의 역할을 하도록 하였는데, 어린이 자료존과 일반 자료존을 분리하지 않아 가족이 함께 와서 같이 책을 읽을 수 있도록 공간을 연결하였고, 3층은 멀티 그라운드로 열람과 체험, 창작과 교육, 커뮤니티활동을 할 수 있는 공간으로 구성하였다고 했다. 

 

이 모든 공간은 원형계단을 통해 하나의 공간으로 연결되어 있고, 공간의 개방성을 극대화하고자 전면 유리창을 통해 바깥의 풍경을 도서관 내부로 들였으며, 서가 등의 가구는 벽면 서가를 제외하고 높지 않은 반투명 아크릴 소재로 제작하여 책 속에서 답답한 느낌이 들지 않도록 하였으며, 의정부미술도서관은 ‘공부’를 위한 도서관이 아닌 전 세대가 어우러지는 공동체 성격의 도서관을 지향하고, 도서관이 조용히 독서만 하는 곳이라는 편견에서 벗어나 시민의 광장으로 도서관의 가치가 진화할 수 있도록 용기있는 변화를 시도하고 있다고 했다. 

 

미술특화 도서관으로 역할을 다하기 위하여 예술서적의 장서구성에 노력을 기울였으며, 특히 백영수 작가를 모티브로 한 도서관으로 신사실파 섹션을 따로 마련하여 우리나라 근현대미술사에 중요한 비중을 차지하고 있는 신사실파 관련자료를 한눈에 볼 수 있도록 하였고, 그 과정에서 자료수집 자문단을 구성하고 자문의견을 통해 신사실파 작가의 작품이 수록된 현대문학 창간호(1955년)등의 희귀자료 550여 점을 소장하고 있다고 했다. 

 

그리고 국립현대미술관과 서울시립미술관의 전시도록을 별도 배치하여 일반인뿐만 아니라 전문가들에게도 도움이 될 수 있도록 수집하고 있으며, 향후 더 많은 미술관의 출판물을 수집 비치할 계획이고, 예술자료를 수집하는 중에 미국 내에서 아시아 컬렉션을 가장 많이 보유한 하와이 호놀룰루미술관에서 기증한 미술전문자료 2,200여 권은 의정부미술도서관 개관 2주년 즈음에 이용자에게 공개될 예정이라고 했다.

의정부미술도서관은 지난 7월 28일부터 '연결: 의정부미술문화축제'展을 개최하고 있으며, 본 기획전시는 의정부미술도서관의 다섯 번째 전시회이며 백영수미술관과 공동개최하고 있고, 백영수, 김선영, 김푸르다, 양홍수, 유벅, 윤엄필, 정창균, 조창환, 최덕호, 최현주, 추니박 등 11명의 작가와 제1회 의정부시 전국 청소년 미술공모전 대상, 최우수상 수상작도 함께 만나볼 수 있는 자리이라고 했다.

 

이번 '연결: 의정부미술문화축제'展은 신사실파 동인이자 의정부 대표 작가인 백영수 화백과 지역 작가들을 연결하고, 이미 잘 알려진 중견 작가들과 작가를 희망하는 청소년 예비 작가를 연결하는 전시로 ‘발상의 전환’과 ‘연결의 가치’를 지향하는 의정부미술도서관의 건립 목적과 정체성이 맞닿아 있는 전시이며, 또한 의정부미술도서관 3층 프로그램실에서는 전연령층을 대상으로 한 전시 연계 교육 프로그램 컬러링 활동지와 강연 등 다양한 프로그램을 진행하고 있고, 오전 11시, 오후 2시에는 도슨트를 통해 전시작품에 대한 해설을 들을 수 있다고 했다.

 

지난 2019년 11월 29일 의정부미술도서관 개관 이후 도서관의 방문자수는 26만 명을 훌쩍 넘겼고, 도서관을 방문한 시민들이 자발적으로 올리는 블로그와 각종 SNS의 후기를 통해 입소문이 난 결과이며, 일반 이용자뿐만 아니라 그동안 전국의 170여 곳의 지방자치단체와 기관이 벤치마킹을 위해 방문하였다고 했다. 

 

도서관에 대한 관심이 급증한 배경에는 책을 읽고 싶게 만드는 공간의 매력과 더불어 주제별, 연령별로 제공되는 북큐레이션에 있으며, 4만 3천 권이 넘는 책들 속에서 각 분야별 서비스 담당사서가 주제에 맞게 가려 뽑은 책들을 한눈에 볼 수 있도록 추천하는 큐레이션 서비스에 시민들의 호응이 뜨겁다고 했다. 

 

또한 미술에 관심 있고 미술을 전공하는 시민들을 위한 플랫폼 역할을 위하여 시민 자원활동가를 전시해설사인 도슨트로 양성하여 시민들의 전시 관람을 돕고 있으며, 또한, 작업 공간이 필요한 신진작가 지원을 위하여 오픈스튜디오를 운영하고 있고, 아울러 미술전공자들에게 진로를 결정하기 전에 다양한 경험의 기회를 제공하기 위하여 청년문화예술아카데미 운영을 통해 문화예술분야의 인재를 인큐베이팅하는 역할도 수행하고 있다고 했다. 

 

이렇게 다양하고 새로운 정책들을 시도하고 있다는 것이 의정부미술도서관이 보여줄 앞으로의 행보가 더욱 기대되는 이유라고 했다. 

 

미술도서관 공간구성의 독창성으로 도서관 본래의 기능에 추가로 관광명소로서도 주목을 받고 있으며 드라마, 예능프로그램의 촬영장소로도 각광을 받고 있으며, 작년에 방송한 드라마‘사이코지만 괜찮아’에서는 그림책 이야기를 하면서 도서관을 둘러보는 장면이 방영되어 화제가 되었고 유재석, 조세호가 진행하는 예능프로그램‘유 퀴즈 온 더 블록’도 도서관의 다양한 공간에서 촬영을 진행하여 입소문을 타기 시작하면서 ‘어느날 우리집 현관으로 멸망이 들어왔다’, ‘하이클래스(2021년 9월 6일 첫 방송 예정)’ 등 다수의 드라마 촬영지로 떠오르고 있다고 했다.
