[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 오는 9월 말까지 의정부시 안병용 시장은 범골로 구간인 의정부시보건소 주변에 식재된 가로수 수종교체 사업을 통해 이용객들에게 쾌적하고 안전한 보행 환경을 제공하기 위해 기존 메타세쿼이아를 제거하고 상록성 가로수인 소나무를 식재한다고 밝혔다. 

시는 의정부동 신시가지의 조성(1987년)과 함께 식재된 메타세쿼이아의 장기간 생장으로 발생되고 있는 뿌리 들림에 대한 주민들의 보행불편 사항을 해소하고, 지속적인 가지치기에도 불구하고 수목의 빠른 생장으로 인해 나뭇가지가 도로표지판이나 신호등을 가리는 현상으로 발생하는 안전사고 예방을 위해 가로수를 교체할 예정이라고 했다. 

시는 범골로 가로수길 개선사업을 위해 지난 4월 27일 의정부시 도시숲 등의 조성․관리심의위원회를 통해 기존 메타세쿼이아 57주를 제거하고 소나무로 수종을 교체하는 안에 대해 만장일치 가결로 행정절차를 마친 바 있고, 범골로 구간은 공공기관이 밀집되어 있어 기존 메타세쿼이아에서 상록성 가로수인 소나무 수종교체를 통해 상징성을 부여할 수 있으며, 특히 겨울철 경관을 고려했다는 것을 특징으로 볼 수 있다고 했다.
