[김현우 기자 = 원주] 주차장 확장을 민선 8기 전략과제로 내건 원강수 원주시장은 신 교육감의 “학교운동장 주차장 활용방안”에 대해 적극 환영한다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

앞서, 신 교육감은 “학교일과가 끝나는 저녁 시간대에 주민들에게 운동장을 개방하고, 이를 주차장으로 활용할 수 있는 방안을 검토하고 있다”라며, “지속적으로 홍보하고 지역과 함께 하겠다”라고 밝힌 바 있다.

10월 기준 원주시 자동차등록현황은 191,656대로 꾸준한 증가 추세를 보이고 있으며, 원주시 내 주차장 총 면수는 189,171면으로 주차장 확보율은 98.7%다.

주차 부족 문제가 꾸준히 제기되고 있는 상황에서 신 교육감의 이번 발언은 문제 해결에 큰 도움이 될 것으로 보인다.

학교운동장을 주차장으로 활용할 경우, 주거 밀집 구역 및 상가 구역 내 주차장 부족 민원을 해결할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 골목길 주차 감소로 교통 흐름도 원활해질 것으로 기대된다.

원강수 시장은 “이번 제안이 현실화되면 부족한 주차 공간 해소에 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.”라고 말했다.
