이번 정원 만들기는 마을정원가꾸기 사업 일환으로 북평면 주민자치회, 스위치온 직원봉사단, 새마을부녀회, 여성의용소방대, 남·여성자율방범대 등 주민과 사회단체 등에서 50여 명이 참여했고, 이날 정선 최고의 경관을 자랑하는 남평 벚꽃길을 거닐며 힐링을 즐길 수 있는 아름다운 마을 정원을 만들기 위해 300m 구간에 엔들레스썸머수국 200본을 비롯한 목마가렛, 사계국화, 바늘꽃 등 꽃묘 1,200본을 식재하고 과꽃 씨앗을 파종했으며 편안한 휴식과 힐링 정원도시를 지향하는 북평면은 지난해부터 북평과 남평 둔치 일원에 6,600㎡의 규모의 형형색색의 아름다운 꽃밭을 조성한데 이어 올해에는 생활정원 2개소와 관내 15개리에 마을정원 조성을 추진중에 있다고 전했다.

전상근 북평면장은 "성공적인 2018 동계올림픽이 열렸던 가리왕산 알파인경기장 일원에 추진하고 있는 국가정원 유치에 발맞춰 국가정원 배후도시로의 기능을 강화하고, 지역 주민과 관광객에게 휴식과 힐링의 공간이 마련될 수 있도록 마을정원 가꾸기에 최선의 노력을 다하겠다"고 말했다.
