[김일웅 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 강원경찰청은 강원자치경찰위원회와 함께 일상회복으로 노인분들의 외부활동이 늘어남에 따라 노인 교통사고가 증가할 것에 대비, 코로나19 방역지침상 하지 못했던 경로당 등 ‘찾아가는 교통안전교육’을 재개하고 교통약자 배려문화 확산에 나선다고 밝혔다.

지난해 도내에서 교통사고로 보행자가 총 48명 사망하였는데, 이 중 65세 이상 ‘노인’이 58%(28명)에 달했고 사고유형으로는 ‘도로횡단 중’ 사고가 대부분(20명)이었으며 특히, 이 중 ‘무단횡단’ 사고가 절반 이상(11명)을 차지하는 것으로 나타났다고 했다.

이에 경찰은 경로당 등 노인이 많이 찾는 곳을 직접 방문해 노인 교통사고 유형 및 특성, 안전한 도로 보행요령 등 어르신 맞춤형 교통안전교육을 실시할 예정이라고 전했다.

특히 신체·지각능력이 떨어진 고령 운전자에 대한 운전면허 자진반납을 적극 홍보하고, 노인보행자 사고가 많이 나는 새벽·야간(예배·운동) 외출 시 밝은 옷 착용, 무단횡단 금지 등 안전보행 방법에 대해 중점 교육할 방침이라고 했다.

이와 더불어 유관기관과 협력해 노인 보행자가 많은 곳을 중심으로 조명·무단횡단 방지시설을 확충하고, 안전용품 보급도 늘릴 계획이라고 했다.

한편 지난 4월 20일부터 시행된 개정 도로교통법은 ‘보·차도 미구분 도로’에서 보행자에게 ‘통행우선권’을 부여하여 보행자 보호의무 위반 시 범칙금 4만원(승용차 기준)이 부과되므로 이면도로나 골목길 운전 시 운전자의 각별한 주의가 요구된다고 했다.
