50년간 석회석 광산으로 쓰여 황폐했던 무릉3지구가 하늘 아래 경치나 분위기가 가장 좋은 곳이라는 의미를 담은 ‘무릉 별유천지’로 시민들에게 돌아온다.

[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 16일 동해시는 무릉 별유천지의 1단계 사업을 마치고 준공식을 개최한다고 밝혔다.

이날 준공식은 무릉별유천지 쇄석장 앞 잔디광장에서 심규언 동해시장을 비롯해 김사열 국가균형발전위원장, 차재근 지역문화진흥원장 최재성 동부지방산림청장 등이 참석한 가운데 진행된다고 했다.

통상적인 광산개발 복구사업은 폐광지를 흙으로 덮고, 나무를 심는 원상복구 수준에서 끝나는 것인데 반해, 동해시는 황폐한 폐광산의 친환경적 복구와 창조적 재생을 통해 그동안 광산개발로 인한 분진, 소음 등 많은 불편을 감내하고 살아온 시민에게 도움을 주고, 더불어, 지역 발전에 기여할 수 있도록 지난 2017년부터 무릉 복합체험 관광단지를 조성해 왔다고 했다.

국비 포함 총사업비 304억원이 투입된 이번 1단계 사업 마무리로, 시는 폐광지에 도로, 상·하수도 등 기반시설 조성과 조경식재를 통한 친환경적 복구를 비롯해 대규모 라벤더 단지와 산책길, 전망대 등 볼거리를 조성하고, 아시아 최초의 유럽식 산악관광 체험시설인 스카이글라이더, 오프로드 루지, 알파인코스터, 롤러코스터형 집라인 등 액티비티한 체험시설을 갖추게 됐다고 했다.

또, 석회석 원석을 잘게 파쇄하던 쇄석장은 원래의 모습을 보존하고 근대 유물 보존, 전시·체험·교육의 산업문화 재생공간으로 거듭났으며, 특히, 쇄석장에서는 16일부터 무릉별유천지 쇄석장 개관 기념으로 <삼화:세 개의 빛> 이란 제목으로 아카이브 자료 전시, 시멘트 생산 공정 등 특별 기념 전시회도 개최된다고 했다.

동해시는 이번 선도사업 준공 이후 2027년까지 2, 3단계 공공·민자 사업 추진(유치)를 통해 힐링과 체험이 어우러진 복합체험관광단지로 조성해 나갈 계획이며, 에메랄드 빛 호수와 웅장한 절개지 등 이국적인 경관을 가진 무릉 별유천지가 주변 관광지 및 산업시설과 연계해 지역 일자리 창출과 상권 활성화에 기여할 수 있도록 박차를 기할 방침이라고 전했다.

김상영 부시장은 “앞으로 무릉 별유천지를 말 그대로 ‘하늘 아래 경치나 분위기가 가장 좋은 곳’으로 거듭날 수 있도록 향후 2, 3단계 개발 추진에 만전을 다하겠으며, 무릉권역을 비롯해 5대 권역별 관광개발사업을 통해 지역 경제 활성화에 기여할 수 있도록 하겠다”고 말했다.
