동두천시는 시민들에게 쾌적한 생활체육 도심 환경을 제공하고자 올해 3월 국가철도공단으로부터 동두천중앙역 옆 전철고가하부 3개 공간 1,690㎡를 사용허가 받았으며, 시는 동두천중앙역 큰시장로 도로에 접한 첫 번째 전철고가하부 공간에 생활체육광장을 우선 조성하고, 나머지 2개 공간은 주민 의견을 수렴하여 내년 상반기까지 체육시설을 조성한다는 계획이라고 했다. 

동두천중앙역 주변은 구도심과 신도심 사이에 위치해 있으며 주거와 상업시설이 밀집되어 있고 유동인구가 많은 초역세권 지역이고, 특히 경원선 전철하부 4.6㎞ 구간에 메타세쿼이아길, 산책로, 자전거도로, 운동시설 등 공원체육시설이 잘 조성되어 있다고 말했다.

한편, 최용덕 동두천시장은 “두드림 생활체육광장이 완공되면 시민의 체력증진 및 건강한 여가활동에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
