[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 동해시는 국가철도공단에서 주관하는 21년도 하반기 철도 유휴부지 활용사업 제안 공모에 전천 폐철교가 실무평가 및 활용심의위원회를 거쳐 지난달 최종 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

동해시는 이번 공모사업을 통해 2023년까지 폐철교를 활용해 산책로, 쉼터 등 시민 편의시설을 설치할 계획이라고 전했다.

철도 유휴부지 활용사업은 국가 소유의 철도 유휴부지를 주민 친화적 공간 또는 지역경쟁력 강화 목적으로 활용하기 위해 진행되는 사업이라고 했다.

전천 폐철교는 1980년경 국가항만기본계획에 따라 동해항 인입철도 교량을 건설하던 중 사업변경으로 인해 40년간 사용되지 않고 방치돼 있었다고 했다.

이에 동해시는, 폐철교의 자원 재생사업을 통해 시민과 관광객에게 휴식공간 및 다양한 볼거리를 제공한다는 방침이라고 전했다.

폐철교(L=265m, B=5m)를 활용, 4월 중 교량 정밀안전진단 및 실시설계 용역을 착수해 2023년까지 총사업비 11억원을 들여 ‘산책로, 쉼터, 장미터널, 전망대, 야간 경관조명 등’ 다양한 테마 공간을 조성할 계획이라고 했다.

특히, 동해시 전천은 평상시 전천 산책길을 이용하는 수많은 도보 이용객과 2020년 3월 개통된 KTX 동해역 철길을 따라 많은 관광객들이 찾는 해파랑길이 근접하고 있어, 폐철교 리모델링을 통해 과거의 옛 추억을 소환하고, 자연, 생태, 사람이 공존하는 기찻길 감성으로 모두에게 잠시나마 힐링이 되는, 휴식공간으로 재탄생할 것으로 기대된다고 했다.
