[김준호 기자=삼척시] 삼척시는 지역 명소인 죽서루가 국보로서의 가치 조사를 위한 문화재청의 현지실사를 오는 24일을 앞두고 국보 승격을 기원하는 시민들의 뜻을 모으기 위한 서명운동을 전개하고 있다.

죽서루를 비롯한 주요 관광지 곳곳에 서명지를 배치하고 각급 유관기관과 사회단체에서도 이에 동참하는 등  삼척 죽서루의 국보 승격을 위한 적극적인 홍보활동에 나서면서 분위기가 한껏 고조되고 있다.

삼척시는 문화재청 현지실사를 위한 준비에 만전을 기하고 이 외에도 추후 삼척 죽서루 국보 승격 기원 사회관계망서비스(SNS) 이벤트, 죽서루 그리기 대회, 죽서루 사진전, 학술대회 등 다양한 행사를 통해 시민들의 관심과 호응 유도에 힘쓸 예정이다.

삼척시 성내동에 위치한 죽서루는 12세기 후반 이전에 건립된 것으로 추정되며, 조선 태종 3년(1403) 중창된 이래 그 모습을 현재까지 유지하고 있고, 5칸 맞배 지붕에서 7칸 팔작지붕으로 증축되는 과정이 고스란히 남아 있어 역사적·건축적으로 가치가 높다.

또한, 죽서루는 관동팔경 중 유일하게 바다가 아닌 오십천 하류에 위치하여 강, 산, 바다를 함께 즐길 수 있어 탁월한 경관적 가치를 지니고 있어 죽서루와 주변 일대가 국가지정문화재 명승으로 지정되어 있으며, 죽서루의 경관을 소재로 한 문학·회화 작품을 다수 보유하고 있어 자연과 조화를 이루는 공간으로서의 의미가 깊다.

한편, 2010년~2016년까지 죽서루와 주변 유적에 대한 총 5차례의 발굴조사 결과, 삼척도호부 관아 터가 확인됨에 따라 관아의 부속 건물로서의 죽서루의 본모습을 확인할 수 있었으며, 2021년 삼척도호부 관아지가 국가지정문화재 사적으로 지정됨에 따라 죽서루의 국보 승격 당위성 또한 지속적으로 제기되어왔다.
