[김준호 기자=삼척시] 문화재청은 지난 3월 24일 보물로 지정되어 있는 삼척 죽서루의 국보 승격을 위한 현지조사에 문화재위원, 문화재전문위원, 문화재청 및 강원도 관계자 등이 참석했다.

삼척시는 죽서루 역사문화공원 조성사업을 추진하는 과정에서 삼척 죽서루 및 주변 일대에 대한 총 5차례의 발굴조사 및 학술조사를 통해 죽서루가 지닌 문화재적 가치와 위상을 확인하고 정립하기 위해 노력해왔다.

지난 2021년, 삼척도호부 관아지가 국가지정문화재 사적으로 지정됨에 따라 삼척 죽서루가 관아의 부속 건물로서의 완전성을 갖추게 되었으며, 이에 따라 죽서루의 국보 승격 당위성 또한 지속적으로 제기되어 왔다.

죽서루는 삼척도호부 관아 객사의 부속 건물로 접대·휴식·향연을 주목적으로 한 누각으로, 정확한 창건 연대는 알 수 없으나 태종 3년(1403) 부사 김효손이 중창한 이래 수차례의 중수·증축·개조·단청을 거쳐 일제강점기를 거치면서도 당시의 모습을 유지하고 있는 유일한 누정 건축물이다.

관동팔경 중 하나인 죽서루가 위치한 곳은 오십천 강가에서도 가장 절경지로 알려져 있어 "삼척 죽서루와 오십천"이라는 이름으로 2007년 명승으로 지정되었다. 

역사속, 수많은 시인 묵객들이 죽서루를 소재로 한 작품을 남겨왔으며 대표적인 작품으로 숙종과 정조의 어제시를 비롯하여 겸재 정선, 단원 김홍도, 표암 강세황의 그림이 남아 있다.

박수옥 문화홍보실장은 "죽서루의 가치와 의미를 새롭게 창조하여 시민들을 위한 문화 공연 및 역사문화 체험 공간으로 자리잡도록 노력해오고 있다."고 말했다.
