[김준호 기자 = 삼척시]  삼척시 대덕산에 위치한 삼척 흥전리 사지(三陟 興田里 寺址)가 국가지정문화재 사적으로 지정됐다.

문화재청은 11월 28일 ‘삼척 흥전리 사지’를 삼척 흥전리 사지(三陟 興田里 寺址)라는 이름으로 국가지정문화재 사적으로 지정고시 했다.

이번 사적 지정으로 삼척 두타산 이승휴 유적, 삼척 준경묘·영경묘, 삼척도호부 관아지에 이은 네 번째 국가지정문화재 사적을 보유하게 되었다.

삼척시 도계읍 대덕산  있는 삼척 흥전리사지는 통일신라시대에 창건되어 고려전기까지 법등을 이어간 대형 사찰로서, 탑과 금당을 갖춘 예불영역과 상중하 3단의 승원영역으로 공간을 나눈 다원식 산지 가람이다.

1995년 석탑, 고승비편 등이 발견되어 학계의 주목을 받았고, 특히 사지에 흩어져 있던 삼중기단의 삼층석탑재는 2003년 정밀지표조사 후 강원도 유형문화재로 지정되었다.

이후 2014년부터 2020년까지 9차례에 걸친 시·발굴 조사 및 2018년·2022년 학술대회 개최를 통해 그동안의 발굴 조사 성과와 의의, 보호·관리·활용 방안 등을 발표된 바 있다

다만 발굴조사에서 출토된 명문(銘文) 기와나 비편(碑片) 중에서는 사명의 단서가 될 수 있는 유물이 출토되지 않아, 삼척 흥전리 사지를 지정 명칭으로 정하였다.

삼척시는 앞으로도 삼척 흥전리 사지에 대한 학술적 연구를 통해 흥전리사지에 대한 역사적 성격 규명에 힘쓰고, 체계적으로 보존·관리하고 활용할 수 있는 방안을 마련해 나갈 계획이다
