최용덕 동두천시장은 “GTX-C노선 동두천 연장 사업이야말로 경기북부에 새로운 교통 허브를 탄생시키고 경기북부와 강남을 30분에 잇는 연결 통로로 자리매김할 것이며, 동두천 연장을 통해 경기도 포천․연천은 물론 양주와 파주 일부지역, 강원도 철원에 이르기까지 접경지역 주민들의 교통 인프라 개선에 크게 기여할 것”이라고 노형욱 국토교통부장관에 설명했다.

이어 “지난 6월부터 약 두 달 간 온․오프라인으로 진행된 서명운동에는 동두천 시민뿐만 아니라 GTX-C노선의 동두천 연장을 바라는 인접 지역 주민들의 간절한 열망이 더해져 이루어낸 성과이며, GTX-C노선 동두천 연장이야말로 경기 북부지역의 정주여건 개선 및 진정한 국토 균형발전의 길이 될 것”이라고 강조하였다.

동두천시는 지난 2월 GTX-C노선 동두천 연장 타당성 용역에 착수하여 10월 25일 GTX-C노선 동두천 연장 건의문과 함께 타당성 용역 최종보고서를 제출하고 자체 타당성 용역에서 경제성(B/C) 1.73과 수익성(PI) 1.70으로 충분한 사업성을 확보한 만큼 동두천 연장에 필요한 사업비 약 530억 원을 시에서 전액 부담하는 조건으로 ‘GTX-C 동두천 연장’이 조기에 확정될 수 있도록 지속적으로 노력하겠다고 밝혔다.
