[김현우 기자 = 사회] 지난 5일 경기도 가평에 있는 육군 수도기계화보병사단(이하 수기사)에서 호국보훈의 달을 맞아 지역 내 거주 중인 6·25 참전용사들을 부대로 초청하는 행사가 진행됐다.

수기사는 6·25 전쟁 당시 대한민국을 수호를 위해 전투에 참가한 선배 전우들에게 감사의 마음과 호국정신을 계승한다는 의미로 진행된 이번 행사를 마련했다. 

행사에는 가평, 포천(일동면)지역 참전용사 31명이 참석했으며, 기념사진 촬영과 함께 사단 역사관 견학 및 참배, 6·25 전쟁 영상 시청, 후배와의 대화, 군악대 브라스 밴드 공연, 오찬 순으로 진행됐다.

참전용사들은 모두 최소 85세가 넘는 고령에도 불구하고 사단 역사관 내부에 비치된 6·25 전쟁 당시의 무기와 사진들을 보며 치열했던 당시의 전투에 대한 이야기들을 나누었으며, 일부는 전사자에 대한 참배를 하던 중 벽에 새겨진 이름과 군번을 바라보다 과거 전우를 생각해 눈시울을 붉혔다. 

이날 가장 인상깊었던 것은 후배와의 대화를 통해 참전용사 선배 전우들을 한 명씩 소개하고 생생한 전투경험담을 직접 듣는 회고의 시간을 가져 후배들이 과거 치열했던 전투현장을 간접적으로나마 체험할 수 있는 시간을 마련했다는 점이다.

행사 안내를 담당했던 류수록 대위는 “참전용사들을 직접 뵙고 말씀을 들으니 마치 할아버지를 뵙는 것 같았다”며, “조국을 위해 헌신하신 분들의 희생이 헛되지 않도록 맹호부대원으로서 임무수행에 최선을 다할 것”이라고 의지를 다졌다.

행사에 참여한 신일균 참전용사는 “선배들을 잊지 않고 불러주어 고마운 마음”이라며, “늠름한 모습으로 임무를 수행하고 있는 후배 장병들을 보니 마음 든든하고 자랑스럽다”며 소감으로 화답했다.

수기사는 지난해부터 창설기념행사를 시작으로 6·25 참전용사, 맹호·안케패스·두코 등 월남전 참전전우회를 부대로 초청하여 존경과 예우를 표현하는 시간을 마련해오고 있으며, 향후에도 국가와 부대를 위해 헌신한 선배 전우들에게 감사의 마음을 전하는 다양한 행사를 개최한다는 방침이다.
