6군단은 국방부 유해발굴 감식단과 공동으로 지난 4월부터 11월까지 비무장지대 내 화살머리고지와 백마고지, 연천 진명산 일대에서 87구의 유해와 29,017점의 유품을 발굴했고, 이 가운데 6·25전쟁 당시 치열한 고지전이 벌어졌던 백마고지 일대에서 발견한 유해는 총 22구에 달한다고 했다.

강건작 육군 6군단장은 추모사를 통해 “나라를 위해 희생하신 마지막 한 분의 유해까지 반드시 찾아내 사랑하는 가족과 조국의 품으로 모셔오는 것이 우리의 책무다.”라며 “우리 후손들이 마음껏 자유와 평화를 누릴 수 있도록 확고한 군사대비태세를 완비해 나가겠다.”라고 다짐했다.

한편, 발굴된 유해는 국방부 유해발굴감식단으로 봉송돼 유전자 분석 등 감식 과정을 거친 후 유족 의사에 따라 국립현충원 등지에 안장될 예정이라고 밝혔다.
