문막농공단지는 지난 1990년에 조성된 노후 산업단지로, 기존 근로자복지관 또한 준공된 지 30년이 지나 근로자를 위한 편의·문화 시설 확충이 시급한 실정이었다고 했다.

시는 이번 공모사업 선정으로 국비 27억 원을 확보, 총사업비 54억 원을 투자해 연면적 1,750㎡ 지상 4층 규모의 복합문화센터 건립을 추진하고 오는 2025년 준공할 예정이라고 했다.

공모에 앞서 문막공단 소재 기업체를 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 결과를 대부분 반영해 근로자 및 지역 주민들을 위한 편의시설과 실내체육시설, 교육·문화시설, 기숙사 등을 갖출 계획이라고 전했다.

조종용 원주시장 권한대행은 “문막농공단지 복합문화센터 건립 사업으로 문막일반산업단지 및 반계일반산업단지가 공동으로 이용할 수 있는 편의시설과 문화공간이 확충돼 공단 활성화에 큰 활력을 불어넣을 것으로 기대한다”라고 말했다.
