[김준호 기자 = 정선군] 정선, 태백, 삼척, 영월 등 폐광지역 시장·군수협의회(의장 최승준 정선군수)에서는 지난 29일 열악한 교통망 개선을 통한 새로운 경제 회생 동력  확보를 위해 “태백선·영동선 준고속철도(EMU-150) 조기도입” 공동건의문을 채택했다고 밝혔다.

정선, 태백, 삼척, 영월이 속한 강원 남부 탄광지역은 과거 석탄산업 합리화 조치에 따른 폐광으로 대다수 시·군의 GRDP는 전국 하위 30%에 해당하여 경제는 위축되어 있다. 

대체산업 육성은 초기 단계에 있어 향후 경제 진흥과 산업기반의 중점 육성이 절실한 상황에서 고속도로와 고속철도 접근성 향상 등 열악한 교통망 개선이 시급하다는 공통된 생각을 가지고 태백선·영동선 준고속철도(EMU-150) 조기도입을 통한 위축된 경제 활성화, 국가 균형 발전을 실현하기 위해 추진되었다.

공동건의문에는 탄광지역의 생활기반과 인프라 접근성이 전국 250개 시·군 중 하위권에 속해있으며, 낮은 접근성으로  새로운 경제활성화 방안 모색이 절실하며, 국가균형발전과 지방시대 실현을 위하여 태백선·영동선 고속열차(EMU-150)를 조기에 도입해 줄 것을 건의하는 내용을 담았다.
