자동차 의무보험 면제는 ▲국외 체류(해외근무 또는 해외유학 등의 사유) ▲질병·부상 등으로 운전 불가(의사 인정 필요) ▲현역 입영(상근예비역 제외), 교도소·구치소 수감의 사유로 6개월 이상 2년 이하의 범위에서 장기간 운행할 수 없는 경우에 신청할 수 있다고 했다.

면제 신청은 보험기간 만료 전에 해야 하며, 면제 증명서와 자동차등록증 및 자동차번호판을 차량등록사업소로 제출하면 된다고 전했다.

한편, 자동차·이륜자동차·건설기계 보유자는 반드시 의무보험에 가입해야 하며, 자동차의 경우 미가입 시 최고 90만원의 과태료를 내야 하고, 사업용 자동차 및 건설기계의 경우 최고 과태료가 230만원이라고 했다.
