[김택곤 기자=정선군] 정선군과 신영이앤피에서는 폐광지역 대체산업 육성을 위하여 신동 목재펠릿 생산단지 조성에 박차를 가하고 있다.

군에서 추진하고 있는 이번 사업은 약 1,400억원 규모의 민간투자사업으로써, 신동읍 천포리에 위치한 석항비축장 유휴부지 27,000평을 활용하여 제조시설, 사무동, 기숙사 등이 포함된 목재펠릿 생산단지를 조성하는 사업이다.

군은 신동 목재펠릿 생산단지 조성 사업 추진을 위하여 지난 2020년 정선군과 한국광해광업공단, 주식회사 신영이앤피간 투자업무협약 체결, 2022년 1월 국토교통부에서 지역개발계획 승인 등 행정절차를 진행했다.

또한 군에서는 올해 강원도로부터 지역개발실시계획 승인을 비롯한 목재펠릿 생산단지 일원 폐광지역진흥지구 추가지정, 강원도와 정선군, 주식회사 펠리스트간 MOU체결 등 행정절차를 마무리하고 2024년 착공해 2025년까지 준공을 목표로 전 행정력을 집중하고 있다.

목재펠릿은 환경부의 대기환경보전법에 따른 대기오염물질 배출계수에 따라 유연탄 대비 대기오염물질 발생량이 1/20 수준이며, 기후변화협약(UNFCCC)이나 유엔 산하 정부간협의체(IPCC)에서는 목재를 탄소중립 연료임을 인정하고 화석연료 대체에너지로 권고하고 있어 새로운 친환경 에너지원으로 다양한곳에서 각광받을것으로 기대하고 있다. 

군은 신동 목재펠릿 생산단지 조성을 통해 정선군은 물론 인근 지역의 미이용 산림바이오매스 자원을 활용한 목재펠릿 제품 생산은 물론 약 110여 명의 직접고용 인력 창출, 동해안 인근 발전소로 년간 최대 30만톤의 안정적인 납품이 가능할 것으로 예상됨에 따라 폐광지역의 모범적인 친환경 에너지 대체산업으로 자리매김할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
