[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 지난 27일 동두천시는 자유수호평화박물관에서 소장해온 태극기가 경기도 등록문화재 1호로 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

이번에 경기도 등록문화재 1호로 선정된 자유수호평화박물관 소장 한국전쟁 태극기는 한국전쟁 당시인 1951년 9월 북한에서 배로 탈출하던 피난민이 간직했던 것이며, 당시 전쟁을 수행중인 미 해군 맥킹버드호가 이 배를 해상에서 발견 배에 타고 있던 피난민을 구조했으며 피난민은 이 함선에 타고 있던 조지 휘트만 소위에게 태극기를 전달했고, 그 후 1981년 동두천 주둔 미군기지에 근무하던 아들 존 휘트만 중령이 당시 동두천 광암동장에 기증한 후 2002년 자유수호평화박물관 개관을 기념해 박물관으로 이전 후 전시중인 태극기이라고 했다.  

경기도 등록문화재는 국가 등록문화재는 아니지만 50년이 지난 근대문화유산을 경기도가 등록문화재로 지정할 수 있고, 지난해 9월부터 실태조사 및 의견수렴 등을 통해 문화재를 선정했다고 전했다. 

박물관 관계자는 “박물관 소장 태극기가 경기도 등록문화재 1호로 선정된 것은 한국전쟁당시 긴박했던 역사적 사건의 비극을 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있으며 역사적 가치가 있어 선정됐다”며 “1호로 선정된 만큼 태극기 유지 및 보존관리 그리고 역사적 교육 자료로서 활용을 위해 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
