[김현우 기자 = 경기북부] 지난 27일 양주시는 광적면 광석1리 마을회관에서 국경없는 수의사회와 공동으로 실시한 ‘마당개 중성화 프로젝트’ 행사가 성황리에 개최됐다고 밝혔다.

앞서 양주시와 국경없는 수의사회는 지난 16일 전국 기초지자체 최초로 마당개 중성화를 위한 업무협약을 맺은 바 있다고 전했다.

이날 행사에는 한태수 농업기술센터 소장과 김재영 대표를 비롯해 정덕영 시의회의장, 김종길 시의원, 국경없는 수의사회 소속 수의사, 서울대 수의학과 학생, 시민, 자원봉사자 등이 참여했다고 했다.

특히 국경없는 수의사회 고문을 맡고 있는 한정애 환경부장관과 홍보대사로 활동 중인 방송인 박수홍씨가 함께 봉사활동에 참여해 이번 프로젝트의 선한 영향력이 확대될 수 있도록 앞장섰다고 했다.

이번 프로젝트는 관리미흡으로 인한 유기동물 발생과 무분별한 개체 수 증가 방지를 위해 동물병원에 데리고 가기 어려운 읍면지역 마당개의 중성화를 마을 단위별로 실시함으로써 사람과 동물의 행복한 공존을 목표로 중성화 수술을 받는 동물들의 안전을 최우선 삼아 진행했다고 했다.

이를 위해 시는 시설준비, 사전교육, 홍보 등 행정적 지원을, 양주경찰서는 안전사고 예방을 위한 질서유지, 시민과 자원봉사자들은 마당개, 길고양이 중성화 후 보호관리·방사 작업을 담당했다고 했다.

자원봉사 수의사들은 중성화수술, 예방접종, 구충 등을 실시했고, 수의학과 자원봉사 학생들은 수술보조, 기록을 도맡는 등 민관이 역할을 분담해 효율적으로 움직였다고 했다. 

이번 행사를 통해 광적면 광석1리 일원 마당개 24두, 길고양이 10두 등 총 34마리를 중성화했다고 전했다.

한태수 소장은 “최근 유기동물 개체 수가 급증하면서 주민 안전사고 문제와 생활불편 민원이 늘고 있는 가운데 전문기술과 동물존중 의식을 갖춘 수의사들의 자원봉사와 재능기부로 중성화 프로젝트 첫 행사가 성공적으로 마무리돼 진심으로 감사의 말씀드린다”며 “이번 프로젝트가 동물보호와 동물복지 수준을 높이는 첫 걸음이 되길 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
