[김현우 기자 = 경기북부] 지난 16일 양주시는 시청 2층 상황실에서 국경없는 수의사회와 손잡고 전국 기초지자체 최초로 ‘마당개 중성화 프로젝트’ 업무협약을 체결했다고 밝혔다. 

마당개 중성화 프로젝트는 마당 등 실외에 풀어놓거나 묶어놓고 기르는 반려견을 중성화함으로써 관리미흡으로 인한 잠재적 유기동물 발생과 무분별한 개체 수 증가 방지를 목적으로 한다고 했다.

이번 협약식에는 조학수 부시장, 김재영 대표, 국경없는 수의사회 관계자, 양주시 관계자 등이 참석한 가운데 유기견의 무분별한 번식 방지와 성숙한 반려문화 증진을 통한 생명존중 사회 조성을 위해 긴밀하게 협력하기로 했다.

양주시는 읍면지역 이장단과 사전 협의를 통해 마당개 중성화를 희망하는 지역을 선정했으며 오는 27일 광적면 광석리 마을회관에서 실시한다고 했다.

국경없는 수의사회에서는 마당개의 안전을 위해 서울대 수의학과 마취팀과 임상경력 15년 이상 베테랑 수의사들과 함께 프로젝트를 진행할 예정라고 전했다.

김재영 대표는 “유기견과 들개의 급증을 방지하기 위해 마을단위로 마당개 중성화 프로젝트를 구상했으며 기초지자체 최초로 양주시와 함께 추진하게 돼 감회가 남다르다”며 “양주시를 시작으로 프로젝트를 점차 확대해 사람과 동물이 행복하게 공존하는 사회를 만들어 가겠다”고 포부를 밝혔다.
