마을주민들은 지난 1967년 1월 정선선(민둥산역~정선역) 철도 개통 이후 마을을 가로지르는 철로 때문에 반세기가 넘는 세월을 가까운 거리도 멀리 돌아다녀야 하는 불편과 무단횡단에 따른 안전 위협으로부터 많은 불편을 겪어왔의며 군에서는 8억 원을 들여 높이 2.5m, 폭 3m, 길이 107m의 철도횡단 지하보도 설치사업을 추진하여 지난 6월말 전면 주민에 개방하게 됐다고 했다.

지하보도 사업에는 CCTV 및 핸드레일을 설치하여 주민들이 안전하고 편리하게 이용할 수 있도록 하였으며, 특히 지하보도 안에는 지역을 대표하는 관광상품인 민둥산 억새를 테마로 한 그림 타일을 설치하여 지역홍보는 물론 갤러리를 연상케 하여 지하보도를 이용하는 주민들에 더욱 쾌적한 이용환경을 제공하여 주고 있다고 밝혔다.
