[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 오는 24일 민선 6·7기 양주시장을 역임한 이성호 시장이 퇴임식을 마지막으로 6년 만에 시장직에서 물러난다고 전했다. 

이성호 양주시장은 퇴임사를 통해 “24일부로 양주시장의 직을 사임한다”며 “재임하던 지난 6년은 보람과 아쉬움이 교차했던 시간”이라고 밝혔다.

이어 양주의 오랜 숙원사업이었던 전철 7호선 연장과 GTX-C노선 확정, 옥정-회천신도시 본격 건설, 광석지구 재추진, 국지도 39호선 확정, 서울-양주고속도로 추진, 교외선 재개통 확정, 수도권 제2순환고속도로 건설, 양주역세권 개발사업과 은남산업단지 조성 등 미래 지역발전 기반으로 자리매김할 주요 역점사업을 현실화한 점을 언급하며 그간의 여정을 술회했다고 했다.

특히 ”각종 사회기반시설을 대폭 늘리며 공약이행율 95%를 달성하는 등 보람과 자부심도 있는 반면 저의 건강문제로 인해 시민 여러분과 더 많은 소통을 하지 못한 점에 대해 매우 아쉽고 송구스러운 마음을 금할 수 없다“며 아쉬움을 전했다.

이 시장은 “임기를 다 채우지 못하고 떠나게 되어 아쉽다”며 “그동안 아낌없는 격려와 성원을 보내주신 시민 여러분과 1,300여 양주시 공직자 여러분에게 진심으로 감사하다”고 감사의 마음을 표현했다.

한편 이성호 양주시장은 2016년 4월 열린 재보궐 선거에서 민선 6기 양주시장에 당선된 뒤 2018년 제7회 전국동시지방선거에서 재선에 성공하며 민선 7기 시장으로 재임했다고 전했다.
