[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 고성군은 주택·도로·관광지 주변에 최근 3년이내 숲가꾸기 이행지에 대한 부산물을 처리함으로써 봄철 산불발생시 대형화재로 발전할 수 있는 원인 차단에 나선다고 밝혔다.

이번 산불 예방을 위한 부산물 처리사업은 최근 산불로 인한 생활권 피해가 확대되고 대형화되는 추세에서 산불을 예방하고 피해 저감을 위한 숲 관리 필요성이 대두됨에 따라 올해 처음으로 실행하는 사업이라고 전했다. 

군은 최근 숲가꾸기를 진행한 261㏊에 대한 전수 조사한 결과 부산물 밀도가 높은 4,618㎡에 대하여 도비 6억4천2백만원을 투자하여 산림내 부산물을 제거할 계획으로 지난 2월말에 설계에 착수하여 3월과 4월 두달 간 부산물을 집중적으로 처리할 계획이라고 했다. 

산불 예방 숲 가꾸기 추진 중 발생한 벌채 산물인 나뭇가지, 나뭇잎 등의 바이오매스는 전량 수집해 산불 및 산사태 피해를 예방하고 목재펠릿 재료로 사용함으로써 신재생에너지 생산에도 기여할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

군 관계자는 “나무의 밀도조절과 더불어 산불 발생 시 연료 역할을 할 수 있는 부산물 수집을 통해 산불에 강한 건강한 숲으로 조성해 구조적으로 안정된 산림을 만들고 산불로부터 주민들의 안전을 확보한다”는 방침이다.

함명준 고성군수는 "기존의 경제적 가치 중심의 숲 가꾸기 외에도 탄소 흡수원 기능을 높여 산림이 가지고 있는 공익기능이 최대한 발휘되는 숲을 조성하기 위해서 꾸준히 노력하겠다"고 말했다.
