지난해 동두천시는 열악한 재정상황에도 학교교육과정 운영 지원, 학교교육환경 개선, 무상교복·무상급식, 초등학교입학축하금 등 60억 원을 지원했으며, 올해는 전년대비 5% 증액하여 63억원을 지원할 계획이라고 전했다.

동두천시장은 “교육인프라가 열악한 지역에 대한 지원을 늘려 교육의 균형발전을 이루는 것이 진정한 교육의 평준화”라며 소외지역에 대한 적극적인 지원을 요청했고, 또한 “앞으로도 교육에 지원을 아끼지 않고, 미래교육을 대비하여 동두천 지역특색에 맞는 교육색깔을 찾아가겠다”고 덧붙였다.
