[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 태백시는 태백 교정시설 신축사업의 신속 추진을 위하여 2022년 새해부터 법무부를 방문하여 행정절차 등 사업 추진을 본격화하고 있다고 밝혔다. 

태백 교정시설 신축사업은 2018년 유치를 시작으로 2019년 최종 확정됐으며 수용자 1,500여 명으로 새로 신설되는 교정시설 중 최대규모이라고 했다.

한국개발연구원(KDI)에서 상반기까지 사업계획 적정성 검토가 완료되면 부지면적 441,082㎡, 건축 연면적 59,650㎡ 규모로 2025년 본격적으로 조성을 시작할 계획이라고 했다.

이에 앞서 태백시는 2월 중 도시관리계획 공공청사 시설 결정을 위한 용역  착수를 위하여 신속하게 준비 중이며, 원활한 사업 추진을 위하여 법무부와의 긴밀한 협조체계도 유지하고 있다고 했다. 

2028년 태백 교정시설 신축사업이 완료되면 교정공무원 500명 및 부양가족 포함 약 1,350명의 인구가 증대될 것으로 보인다고 전했다.

태백시 관계자는 “지방교부금 등 재정 인세티브 확대, 교정시설 운영에 따른 일자리 창출 등으로 지역경제 활성화에 크게 기여할 것으로 전망한다”고 말했다.
