[서종협 기자 = 태백시] 태백시는 교정시설 건립 목적으로 강원도에 입안 되었던 “태백 도시관리계획(시설:공공청사) 결정(변경)” 신청사항이 강원도 도시계획위원회 심의를 거쳐 최종“원안 의결” 통과되면서 도시관리계획 결정 고시를 완료하고 태백 교정시설 신축사업 추진이 본격화 되면서 조기 건립에 탄력을 받을 예정 이라고 밝혔다.

테백 교정시설 신축사업은 지난 2016년 12월 29일 헌법재판소의 구치소 내 과밀수용 행위에 대한 위헌결정으로 법무부에서 수도권 서울구치소 등 11개 교정시설의 과밀수용을 해소해야 하는 필요성이 대두되었고, 태백시가 정부기관 유치를 통한 일자리 창출 및 경제 활성화에 대한 기대를 바탕으로 유치된 사업이다.

2019년부터 태백시 교정시설 유치위원회를 창립하고 태백시 교정시설 대시민 서명운동 등을 통해 추진되었다. 주무 부처인 법무부는 사업의 기대효과로 교정시설 신축을 통한 과밀수용 환경 개선 및 인권 향상, 태백지역 경기활성화를 통한 지역균형발전, 폐광지역개발 대체사업 추진에 따른 태백시 발전 및 사회간접시설 조성에 따른 태백시 인구유입 효과 등을 제시하였다.
