시는 올해부터 시행하는 단계적 일상 회복에 맞추어 그동안 피로감이 누적되어 일상에 지친 시민들을 위로하고 관광객 유치를 위하여 축제를 개최하고자 하였으나, 코로나19가 유행 정점에 이르고 확진자가 급증하는 시기로 부득이하게 취소를 결정했다고 전했다.

지난 2019년 동해안 산불과 2020년부터는 코로나19로 4년째 설악벚꽃축제가 취소되어 상춘객과 지역주민들의 아쉬움이 클 것으로 예상된다고 했다.

설악벚꽃축제는 농촌문화체험과 어린이 사생대회, 물고기 맨손잡기체험, 농산물전시판매 등 다양한 즐길거리로 지난 2009년에 시작하여 2018년까지 10회 운영되며 속초를 대표하는 봄꽃축제로 자리 잡았다고 했다.

속초시 관계자는 “코로나19 오미크론 변이 확산세가 지속되고 봄꽃축제 취소를 권고하는 정부의 방역지침에 따른 조치로, 설악벚꽃 축제를 4년연속 취소하여 아쉽지만, 벚꽃나무로 조성되어 있는 도로변을 드라이브하며 안전하게 벚꽃을 즐기시길 부탁드리며 차량통행이 많은 만큼 주정차는 자제해 주실 것을 당부드린다.”라고 말했다.
