[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 고성군은 '2021년도 강원도 지역균형발전 특별회계 시범사업'으로 선정된 '화진포 셔우드 홀 문화공간 조성사업’을 본격 추진한다고 밝혔다.

이 사업은 지난 1891년에 조선에 들어와 인천, 서울, 평양을 오가며 수많은 조선인들을 위해 열심히 헌신한 닥터 ‘셔우드 홀’ 의 업적을 모티브로고성 북부권 최대 관광지인 화진포 내 관광자원을 개발하여 고성 남북권역간 불균형발전 해소를 위해 추진하는 사업이며, ‘셔우드 홀’은 1940년 일제에 의해 해외로 추방될 때까지 우리 민족을 위해 헌신적으로 활동했다고 했다. 

‘한반도 최초의 결핵요양원’인 황해도 해주 구세병원을 세웠고, 뉴욕에 있던 본부의 허락을 얻어 남대문 형상을 문양으로 한 ‘우리나라 최초의 크리스마스 씰’을 발행했다고 전했다.

화진포 셔우드 홀 문화공간 조성사업은 도비 17억원, 군비 21억원 등 총 38억원이 투자되며 현, 화진포 생태박물관을 리모델링하여 오는 2023년 6월 준공예정이라고 했다.

군 관계자는 “2월중 조달청에 협상에 의한 계약을 의뢰하고 4월 착공계획으로 화진포관광지 일원에 셔우드 홀 문화공간을 조성함으로써  고성 북부권 균형발전에 기여할 수 있도록 조성할 계획이다.”라고 밝혔다.
