속초시는 지난 2020년부터 고령운전자 교통사고 발생률을 줄이고자 운전면허 자진반납자에 대하여 최초 1회 한정하여 교통비 10만 원을 지급하고 있다고 전했다. 

2022년 지급 대상자는 1957년 이전 출생자로 관내 주민등록이 되어있으며, 속초시청에 운전면허 자진반납 통합 신청한 사람 또는 경찰서로부터 면허반납을 신청하여 강원지방경찰청으로부터 운전면허가 실효 처리된 사람이 대상이 된다고 했다.

고령운전자 운전면허 자진 반납을 희망하는 시민은 속초시청을 방문하여 자진반납 통합처리 신청서를 작성하고 운전면허증을 반납하면 된다고 했다. 

대리인이 신청할 때에는 경찰서에서 운전면허 실효 처리 후 운전면허 취소처분 결정통지서와 함께 속초시청으로 방문하여 보상금 신청서를 작성하면 된다고 했다.
