[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 10일 15시 동해시는 강원도청 본관2층 소회의실에서 ‘동해·묵호항을 모항으로 하는 동해항 컨테이너 항로개설 업무협약’을 체결한다고 밝혔다.

협약식은 최문순 강원도지사, 심규언 동해시장, 정재훈 동해지방해양수산청 청장, 강성훈 SW해운(주) 대표 등이 참석한 가운데 진행된다고 전했다.

이번 협약에 따라, 선사인 SW해운(주)은 취항을 위한 제반 사항 준비와 시에 제안한 단계별 사업계획을 성실히 이행하게 되며, 동해지방해양수산청은 선석배정 등 항만 운영 관련 지원, 도와 시는 지원 조례에 근거한 행·재정적 지원을 약속하게 됐다고 했다.

이번 협약 체결을 기점으로 선박 구입, 컨테이너 박스 제작 등을 통한 동해항 컨테이너선 취항까지는 6개월가량이 걸릴 것으로 예상되며, 선사는 취항 후 1년 내 북방항로 추가 개설을 위해 노력할 계획이라고 했다.

한편, 그동안 동해시는 국가 관리 항만인 동해·묵호항을 보유하고 있었음에도 항만 인프라 및 하역능력 부족으로 장금상선, MCC 등 컨테이너선 취항 및 안정적 운항 등에 대한 아쉬움이 있었다고 했다.

이에, 강원도와 동해시는 기존 실패를 반복하지 않기 위한 협의를 지속하고, 이번 컨테이너선 취항을 통해 항만 인프라 개선, 동해항 및 항만 배후단지 국가 정책 반영 등을 위한 협력 체계를 구축하기로 했다.

박종을 투자유치과장은 “이번 취항을 계기로 동해·묵호항에 대한 정부의 정책적 고려를 이끌어냄과 동시에 동해항이 수도권과 인근 국가 주요 항만을 연결하는 동해안 대표 복합물류항만으로 거듭날 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
