[김준호 기자=삼척시] 국내에서 가장 큰 규모의 동굴들이 밀집되어 있는 삼척시가 국가지질공원 인증을 위한 힘찬 발걸음을 내딛었다.

국가지질공원은 지구과학적으로 중요하고 경관이 우수한 지역으로서 이를 보전하고 교육·관광사업 등에 활용하기 위하여 환경부장관이 인증한 공원으로, 지역의 지속가능한 발전을 도모하는 제도이다.

삼척시는 지질유산적 가치가 국내 최고 수준인 환선굴, 대금굴, 관음굴로 대표되는 대이리 동굴지대(천연기념물 제178호) 외에도 초당굴(천연기념물 제226호), 미인폭포, 이끼폭포, 월미도 시스텍, 덕풍계곡, 카르스트 지형 등 많은 지질유산이 고루 분포하고 있다.

이에 시는 이러한 지질유산을 교육 및 관광에 활용하기 위해 지난 1월 삼척 국가지질공원 인증을 위한 타당성 및 학술조사 연구용역을 착수하여 2월 10일 시청 본관 2층 소회의실에서 최종훈 부시장 주재로 착수보고회를 가졌다.

이번 보고회는 유네스코한국위원회 인문사회·자연과학분과위원회 위원장을 맡고 있는 우경식 강원대학교 명예교수의 착수보고로 시작됐으며, 

삼척시 지질유산의 정밀조사를 통한 지질명소 발굴 및 학술가치 증명 등 국가지질공원 인증을 획득하기 위한 연구추진 방안의 다각적인 논의와 아울러 이를 토대로 지역경제 활성화에 기여하기 위한 방안을 논의하였다.

홍금화 관광정책과장은 “국가지질공원 인증을 통해 삼척시의 지질유산에 대한 가치의 재발견 및 삼척시의 브랜드 가치를 높이고 관광 활성화에 이바지할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다.”고 말했다.
