[서종협 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 동해시(시장 심규언) 북삼동 아파트 밀집지역에 최근 보행자 전용 건널목이 신설되는 등 주민들의 보행 여건이 대폭 개선 되었다고 밝혔다.

지난 1968년 쌍용C&E 공장이 건립됨에 따라 가설된 기존 철도건널목은 출퇴근 및 통학시 차량과 주민이 넘나들던 주요 통행 구간으로, 주위에 인근의 초·중·고와 북삼동 행정복지타운, 대규모 아파트 단지 등이 조성되면서 이 구역 주변은 북삼지역의 중심부가 됐다.

그럼에도, 인근 거주 주민 5천세대는 철길을 따라 형성되어 있는 상가를 비롯하여 학교와 관공서 등을 가기 위해 수백미터를 우회하는 큰 불편을 겪어왔다.

이에, 시는 주민불편을 해소하기 위한 주민 숙원사업으로 북삼·대동 청원 건널목을 지난 8일 개통했다.

시는 인근 지역 주민 불편을 조기 해소하기 위해 국토교통부와 국가철도공단 등 관계기관에 건널목 개선 방안 건의 등 지속적인 협의를 진행하였으며, 지난해 11월 국민권익위원회의 중재로 철도건널목 설치에 대한 중재안을 최종 확정하여 금년 5월말 착공했다.

장인대 건설과장은 “북삼 대동 청원 건널목 개통으로 주변 관공서, 상가의 접근성과 보행자 안전이 크게 개선되었다 ”며, “오토바이 등 이륜차 통행금지에 시민들의 많은 협조를 바란다.”고 당부했다.
