무궁화동산의 면적은 5천㎡로, 한반도섬 내에서 함경북도의 위치에 조성됐으며 무궁화동산 내에는 백단심과 청단심, 홍단심 등 다양한 품종의 무궁화 200여 본과 구절초, 금낭화, 맥문동 등 4천여 본의 초화류, 지피식물 등이 식재됐고 포토 존 1개소가 설치됐으며, 수목 표찰과 무궁화 조형물 벤치 등 편의시설도 들어섰다고 밝혔다.

국화인 무궁화를 심어 무궁화에 대한 국민적 관심을 높이고 애국심을 함양하기 위해 추진된 '무궁화동산 조성 사업'은 지난해 산림청이 공모한 사업이며 군은 지난해 10월 산림청의 심사에서 무궁화 명소로의 가능성, 접근성, 사후관리 편이성 등에서 높은 점수를 받아 도내에서 유일하게 사업 대상지로 선정됐고 이후 국비 5천만 원과 지방비 5천만 원 등 총 1억 원의 사업비를 투입해 올해 2월 실시설계를 마쳤고, 지난 5월 2일 착공한지 한 달여 만인 지난 17일 완공했다고 했다.
