[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 2월 24일, 화천군은 지난해 에티오피아 현지 명성의대를 졸업한 후손 4명이 현재 인턴과정을 수련 중이며, 2명은 학부과정 재학 중이라고 밝혔다. 

화천군이 후원 중인 장학생 중 마지막 1세대 후손 메르하위 훈데씨가 오는 3월 한림대학교 대학원 석사과정 입학을 앞두고 있으며, 한림대 뿐 아니라 명지대에서도 화천군이 후원하는 참전용사 후손 1명이 대학원 석사과정을 밟고 있다고 전했다. 

유학생들의 학비는 대학이, 생활비는 화천군이 지원하고, 지난 2009년 에티오피아 참전용사 후손 장학사업을 시작한 화천군은 2010년부터 한림대와 명지대와 함께 후손들의 유학을 돕고 있다고 했다. 

지난해에는 장학사업 원년부터 화천군의 지원을 받아온 이스라엘 피세하씨가 한림대 석사와 전북대 박사과정을 졸업 후 참전용사 후손 중 처음으로 국내 경성대학교 초빙교수로 임용된 바 있다고 전했다. 

화천군은 지난 2009년부터 현재까지 모두 308명의 장학생을 선발해 후원했으며, 이중 134명이 학업을 마쳤고, 나머지 174명은 학업에 열중하며 꿈을 키워가고 있다고 했다. 

에티오피아는 한국전쟁에 6,037명을 파병한 유일한 아프리카 국가이며, 화천지역은 에티오피아 황실근위대 소속 ‘강뉴(Kagnew)’ 부대원들이 첫 교전을 벌인 곳이자 주요 전장이었다고 했다.

최문순 화천군수는 “참전용사의 후손들이 우리 장학사업을 통해 잘 성장해 고국을 위해 자신의 역할을 다하고 있다는 소식이 들릴 때마다 정말 큰 감동과 보람을 느낀다”고 밝혔다.
