[김일웅 기자= 경기북부] 북부지방산림청최수천 청장은 지난 8일 (사)생명의 숲, 유한킴벌리(주)와 용인 석포숲에서 탄소중립의 숲 조성 및 관리를 위한 ‘공동산림사업 업무협약’을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

이번 공동산림사업 업무협약은 민·관·기업이 서로 협력하여 신혼부부 등 시민들이 참여하여 나무심기를 통해 탄소중립 숲 모델을 제시하고 조림 및 숲가꾸기의 중요성을 널리 알리기 위해 체결되었다고 전했다.

‘탄소중립의 숲’은 대기 중으로 배출한 이산화탄소의 양을 일정부분 상쇄시키기 위해 탄소를 흡수하는 나무를 식재하여 조성된 중립숲을 말하며, 이번 탄소중립의 숲은 19.3ha로 ’21년부터 ’25년에 걸쳐 5년간 낙엽송·소나무·전나무 등 탄소 흡수에 우수한 수종을 식재한다.

또한, 지난해 우리 정부의 2050 탄소중립 선언으로 산림청에서는 2050년까지 30억 그루 나무심기로 탄소중립 3,400만톤에 기여하겠다는 추진전략을 발표한바 있다. 이에 따라 북부지방산림청은 탄소중립의 숲 조성 공동산림사업으로 이산화탄소 흡수원 확충 및 탄소중립 실현에 적극적으로 동참하고자 한다고 밝혔다.

공동산림사업이란 산림사업의 효율적 추진 및 지역사회의 발전을 위해 산림청장의 설립허가를 받은 법인 등과 지방산림청간 공동 협약으로 추진하는 사업이다.
 

최수천 북부지방산림청장은 “이번 업무협약을 통해 국민 모두가 기후변화 위기에 따른 탄소중립 노력과 대응에 중요한 주체임을 인식할 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 한다.”라며, “앞으로 탄소중립의 숲 조성을 확대하여 탄소흡수원 확충을 위해 앞장서겠다.”라고 밝혔다.
